Sweet and salty candy is one of my favorite things to make this time of year. So this week I am making a Christmas crack recipe.

This recipe is a little like chocolate peppermint bark in that it is a whole slab that is the broken up into smaller pieces with your hands or a knife, but this has different ingredients.

Let’s Break It Down

Sweet and Salty Candy

What is This Sweet and Salty Christmas Crack Made Of?

Christmas Crack is a sweet and salty candy with a saltine cracker base a toffee made with butter and brown sugar and then chocolate like dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate. Or in my case, semi sweet chocolate.

1st Layer – Salty and Savory Layer

This layer is traditionally made up of saltine crackers but you can also use sweet and salty pretzels or even potato chips. Any salty and crispy thing. You could use graham crackers but these don’t really have the salty element that we are looking for. Whichever you chose, just lay them out in a flat layer.

If you are looking for vegan options, Saltine Crackers are vegan.

2nd Layer -Saltine Toffee/ Cracker Toffee Layer

The toffee layer is a very easy mixture of melted butter and brown sugar. In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Then add the brown sugar and stir that in. Bring that to a boil and cook for about 5 minutes.

Is Christmas Crack Toffee Supposed to Be Sticky?

Your Toffee Should Not Be Sticky. If it is, that means it was not cooked enough. After this is boiled, you want to add it to the crackers and bake for 5 minutes at 350•. This will really lock in and set that toffee.

Keto Cracker Toffee

To make this toffee keto, all you have to do is replace the brown sugar with a keto certified brown sugar. Such as Swerve.

3rd Layer – The Chocolate Layer

Next is just to very simply top this with melted chocolate. I think that the sweetness of this Christmas crack or bark is really best balanced with a dark chocolate or semi sweet chocolate chips but you can also make white chocolate peppermint bark or Christmas crack by using white chocolate chips if you want.

To get the peppermint flavor you can use peppermint extract in the chocolate but make sure that it’s oil and not water based. Water will cause your chocolate to seize and be ruined.

Decoration

  • Crushed Candy Canes Or Any Peppermint Candy
  • Pretzel Bits
  • Flaky Sea Salt
  • Christmas M&M’s
  • Christmas Sprinkles

Keto Christmas Crack

To make Christmas Crack Keto, you have to do a few things. First of all, use almond flour crackers instead of Saltine Crackers. Then use the sugar substitute that we discussed before to make the toffee. Then top with a very dark chocolate.

How to Store Your Christmas Crack In The Fridge

To store this candy, put it in an airtight container in the fridge to keep it fresh. It should keep for about 1 week.
